Voreda
Old to new, the spiral end is indicating the way life moved, bones firmly embedded in the soil held together as each generation lived and died here. Voreda fort, once by the side of a busy road leading to Carlisle and Hadrian's Wall in Roman times now lies almost forgotten by the side of the A6. This work came from study - in Penrith museum and Tullie House Carlisle - of quernstones found on this site during excavations.
This spiral of bone like pieces was briefly on show to those who sped by on the main road and when the cows were ready to come out into the field again, it was taken up and a small portion was put in a case in Penrith museum.
